Isak Dinesen once said Difficult times have helped me to understand better than before, how infinitely rich and beautiful life is in every way, and that so many things that one goes worrying about are of no importance whatsoever. So many times throughout my life I have felt the same way. Ive experienced death of a parent, having a white mom and a black dad, racial prejudice, and many more events that have made an impact on my life and helped influence my character.
When I was a toddler, my mother and I were abused by my father. I spent the majority of my time at my grandparents house to protect me from the ill-treatment. At the age of four my mother was killed in a car accident and my grandparents were granted legal guardianship of me. As a young child I didnt really understand the death of my mother, but as I got older and began to think about the things that she was going to miss out on it hurt me a lot more. She wouldnt get to help me get ready for my first dance, my graduation, my wedding, and many other significant events that would happen during the course of my lifetime. My grandmother always insists that my mom might not be here in body, but shes always here in spirit, watching everything I do. Because she is watching I try my best to impress her and make her proud of me.
Living with my grandparents was a great arrangement. They always tried their hardest to give me everything Ive ever wanted or needed. They enrolled me in dancing, gymnastics, local plays, and piano lessons to make me well-rounded. They lived in a very nice, primarily white, neighborhood. My elementary school was small, and there were no other African-American children in my class. I never realized that I was a different color than my playmates. I never had reason to really think about it until one day a child in my class asked me why I was brown. I didnt have a response. I didnt really know I was brown so of course I didnt know why I was. I went home and asked my grandparents and they explained to me why I was a different color than my friends. They told me that being of a different race was not a bad thing, and that its whats on the inside that counts. When I was in junior high I was experienced to more people just like me, people who also had a black parent and a white parent. It was a relief to know that I wasnt alone. The majority of African-American students at my school were all from the same community. It was primarily lower class blacks that lived there. They grew up in a different, more urban, environment then me. They were exposed to violence, drugs, alcohol, sex, rap music, and urban clothing, all things that I never knew existed. I was ridiculed for being different. I was told I acted white. I didnt understand how the same group of people who complained about getting stereotyped, stereotyped themselves. I was so confused. I felt like I didnt belong. Thats when I decided to join the cheerleading squad.
I was involved in many activities during my junior high years. I didnt know who I was, but I knew if I experimented that I would find my true interests. I was involved in gymnastics, dancing, local plays, band, piano lessons, voice lessons, chorus, and cheerleading. Not all of my activities held my interest as I proceeded from junior high to high school. My enthusiasm was still with cheerleading. It was my true passion, the one thing I could see myself continuing with and doing in college. I involved myself with not only cheering in high school but also with cheering on an all-star squad. I love competing and thats what all-star cheerleading is all about. It was perfect for me. I plan to cheer in college.

Now I'm a senior in high school and I continue with all my activities. I also added track to my list of activities my freshman year and am still participating in it. I recently auditioned for my schools spring musical and got a leading role as one of the pink ladies. I plan on attending West Virginia University in the fall.
