    General Safety on SSC

[Tips for Parents] [Tips for Teens]

Star Search Casting is a global entertainment portal that reaches millions of people around the world. It's important to know that youand each person on the siteplay an important role in keeping the community safe.

This area of our site is dedicated to helping you learn how you can keep yourself and your family safe online, and on an entertainment portal like Star Search Casting. Throughout this area, you will find useful safety information, tips and resources to navigate online communities and to help teach your family and friends to do the same.

Star Search Casting is steadfast in our commitment to keeping people safe online through unique safety features and technology, partnerships with safety organizations and law enforcement, and our support of new laws that will nurture the growth of online safety tools, education and research.

Star Search Casting aspires to be an environment where people can interact safely with their friends and the people around them. We have implemented many safety and privacy controls on Star Search Casting as part of our goal to enable people to share their information with only the people they want to see it. And we are constantly improving our systems for identifying and removing inappropriate content and people from the site.

Despite Star Search Casting's safety and privacy controls, Star Search Casting cannot guarantee that its site is entirely free of illegal, offensive, pornographic or otherwise inappropriate material, or that its members will not encounter inappropriate or illegal conduct from other members. Consequently, you may encounter such content and conduct. You can help Star Search Casting by notifying us of any nudity or pornography, or harassment or unwelcome contact by clicking on the "Report" link located on pages throughout the site. Where confidential complaints are made through this site reporting tool, Star Search Casting will use best efforts to remove the offending content or conduct and to warn or, as appropriate, to bar from the site those transmitting such content or engaging in such conduct within 24 hours of receiving your complaint. Where complaints about nudity or pornography, or harassment or unwelcome contact are made by using the Report Abuse option on our Contact Us page, Star Search Casting will acknowledge receipt of your complaint and begin addressing your complaint within 24 hours of receipt. Star Search Casting will report back to you within 72 hours of receiving your email complaint to inform you of the steps Star Search Casting has taken to address the complaint.

We need all users to report suspicious people and inappropriate content they encounter on Star Search Casting. And we strongly encourage users under the age of 18 to talk to their parents or a responsible adult immediately if someone online says or does something to make them feel uncomfortable or threatened in any way.

Remember that although using fake names is a violation of the Star Search Casting Terms of Use, people are not always who they say they are. You should always be careful when sending friend requests to, or accepting friend requests from people you do not know in the real world. And it is always risky to meet anyone in person whom you don't know through real world friends.

Always follow these important safety tips when using Star Search Casting:

    1. Never share your password with anyone
    2. Adjust your privacy settings to match your level of comfort, and review them often
    3. Be cautious about posting and sharing personal information, especially information that could be used to identify you or locate you offline, such as your address or telephone number
    4. Report users and content that violate our Terms of Use
    5. Block and report anyone that sends you unwanted or inappropriate communications

    General safety information

How can I be safer on SSC?

First, don't give out your password to anyone, not even your significant other or best friend. Be sure to customize your privacy settings on the Privacy Settings page if you are uncomfortable having your profile viewed by people from your school or work networks. Remember, unless you're prepared to attach something in your profile to a resume or scholarship application, don't post it.

Where can I find information about my privacy and protecting my information on SSC?

To edit the privacy settings for your own SSC account, choose the "Account Settings" option from the Account drop-down menu available from the top right corner of every page. From this page you can personalize your privacy settings for Profile Information, Contact Information, Applications and Websites. You can also read SSC's Privacy Policy here.

What other resources are available regarding internet safety?

We have some good websites and resources listed here.

What do I do if someone is pretending to be me on SSC?

If someone has created an account to impersonate or imitate you, please go to the impostor profile and click "Report Abuse" in the left column. Be sure to add a valid web address (URL) leading to the real profile so that we can review the information.

    Addressing Personal Safety

I'm receiving unwanted messages. What should I do?

There are a few things you can do:

You can anonymously report messages by clicking on the "Block Me" link to the right of the picture of the sender when viewing their message. This will blobk the person from sending you anymore messages and also report the person to SSC. SSC will review your complaint and will act to ensure all users comply with our policies so that SSC remains a trusted environment where people can interact safely.

You can easily block any user on SSC from seeing or contacting you by going to their page and clicking "Block Me" which is located under the large picture on the left side of the page. You can view or remove people from your blocked list by going to your "Account Settings" and visiting the "Block List" link.

I'm receiving unwanted comments or posts to my profile Wall. What should I do?

There are a couple of options available:

You can remove any offensive Wall postings by clicking on the "Delete Comment" link that appears to the right side of each posting.

If you would like to prevent the individual from leaving any more unwanted postings, just click the "Block User" also located to the right of each comment. This will precent the person from sneding you messages, comments, or networking requests.

What do I do if someone is harassing me on the site or through Inbox?

We suggest that you block the person using the "Block Me" option on that members profile page. If this does not resolve the problem, please report the user by clicking the "Report Abuse" link that appears on the left side under the large picture on that user's profile. To report a user for a message you have received, use the report link located next to the message in your Inbox.

What do I do if someone is attacking me in SSC Chat?

Please keep in mind that only your confirmed friends can contact you via SSC Chat. We recommend that you remove this user from your Friend List. If necessary, you may block and or report the person by clicking the links in the chat window.

What can I do to prevent or address cyberbullying?

We want SSC to remain an environment where people can connect and share comfortably. Cyberbullying is defined as the use of any new technology to harass or intimidate someone, and there are steps you can take to prevent this kind of behavior if it occurs.

    Accept Networking/Friend Requests Safely

In order to prevent harassment from strangers, be careful who you accept a networking request from. Also, remember to report any messages or profiles that look suspicious. SSC is based on a real-name culture, and fake profiles are regularly disabled when they're reported to us. Please also keep in mind that only confirmed friends can contact you via SSC Chat, so if you're worried that someone will make inappropriate posts or send offensive messages, just ignore that person's friend request.

Use the "Block" Feature to Stop Abusive Behavior

A block prevents specific people from viewing your profile. When you block people, any ties you currently have with them will be broken, and these people won't be able to contact you through SSC. If you receive inappropriate or abusive communication, you can block the person by clicking the "Block Me" link on the left side of their profile page under the large picture. You can view the people you have blocked and unblock anyone you want by going to "Block List" which can be found under "Account Settings".

Report Abusive Behavior Directly to SSC

The most efficient way to report abuse is to do it in the same place it occurs on SSC. For example, if you receive a harassing message in your Inbox, you can report the message by clicking on the "Block Me" link next to the sender's picture as you are reading the message. If you receive a harassing message from a person who is a SSC friend of yours, you should remove the person as a friend and report the message by clicking the "Block Me" link to the right of the persons picture when reading the message. Clicking "Block Me" when reading a message will automatically add that person to your block list and report the message to SSC for review. You can also use the Report/Block links that appear on the left side od the profile under the abusive users picture. If you learn that someone is continuing to make abusive comments about you even after you've blocked them, you can ask a friend to report that person on your behalf. Reports are confidential and the user being reported does not know that they have been reported. After a report is submitted, we will investigate the issue and make a determination as to whether or not the content should remain on the site based on our policies. A SSC administrator looks into each report thoroughly before taking action. Please note that our team makes it a priority to respond to reports of harassing messages on the site.

    Restrict Privacy Settings

To restrict the amount of information that potential bullies may have access to, customize your privacy settings so that certain people can't access information like your Wall, photos, or profile. You can also change your privacy settings if you are uncomfortable being found in search engines or having your profile viewed publicly. Privacy on SSC is controlled primarily from the Privacy Settings page. This page is always available by navigating to the "Account Settings" option in the drop-down menu available from the top of every page.

Respond to Abusers in the Right Way

Cyberbullies often seek a reaction from the people they harass. When they fail to get one, they often give up gradually. Rather than responding to a bully via Inbox, a Wall post, or SSC Chat, you can use the "Block" or "Report" functions to resolve the issue safely. Remember, only confirmed friends can send you a message through Chat. If you are receiving posts and Chat messages you don't like, you should consider removing the sender from your friends list. Please note that you should also contact the authorities if you ever feel threatened by something you see on the site.

To block a user, click on "Account Settings" in the upper right corner of any SSC page and then go to "Privacy Settings". Once you're on the Privacy Settings page, you can then click on the "Block List" option. Blocking allows you to prevent all interactions with someone on SSC. They won't be able to find you in searches, view your profile, or contact you, and will not be notified that you blocked them.

What if my current or ex-boyfriend, girlfriend, or spouse is controlling or monitoring what I do on SSC?

If your current or ex-boyfriend, girlfriend or spouse is controlling or monitoring your activity on SSC, this could be a sign of relationship abuse. If you think this might be happening to you, please call the National Domestic Violence hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE to find out about resources in your community and get additional safety information.

You may also want to consider restricting privacy on your SSC account so that certain people cant access information like your Wall, photos, or profile. Remember that computer usage can be monitored. If youre afraid that your computer isnt safe, use a friend's computer or a computer in a public place, or visit http://stoprelationshipabuse.org/techsafe.html to learn more about computer safety.

How do I report abusive behavior from a friend on SSC?

If you are noticing abusive behavior from a person who is currently on your Friend List, we recommend that you remove this user from your Friend List and report them using the "Block Me" link that appears on the left side of their profile under their large picture.

How do I help someone who has posted suicidal content on SSC?

If you have encountered a direct threat of suicide on SSC, please immediately contact law enforcement. For reports in the United States, we also recommend that you contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, a 24/7 hotline, at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). If possible, please encourage the user who posted the content to contact Lifeline as well.

You can view a list of suicide prevention hotlines in other countries by visiting http://www.befrienders.org and choosing from the dropdown menu at the top of the page.

We encourage you to learn about how to identify and respond to warning signs of suicidal behavior online at the following address:

    http://www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/GetHelp/WhatifSomeoneIKnowNeedsHelp.aspx

    Responding to Objectionable Content

What do I do if I find an explicit, hateful or otherwise objectionable profile on SSC?

We don't want any content like this on SSC. You can help us out by notifying us of any objectionable profiles. You can anonymously report offensive profile pictures and content by clicking on the "Report Abuse" link located on the left side of the profile page under their large picture. When you click the "Report Abuse" link you can enter a description of the problem. SSC will review your complaint and will act to ensure all users comply with our policies so that SSC remains a trusted environment where people can interact safely.

What happens when I report someone?

All abuse reports on SSC are confidential. The user that you are reporting will not know that you have reported them. After the report is submitted, SSC investigates the issue and makes a determination as to whether or not the content should remain on the site based on our policies. In certain situations, the circumstances require more severe action. For instance, users who repeatedly violate our policies can be permanently banned from the site.

Please be aware that not all reported content will be removed. A SSC administrator looks into each report thoroughly in order to decide the appropriate course of action. If no violation of our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities has occurred, then no action will be taken.

What do I do if someone has posted a photo that I don't like?

SSC will only remove photos that violate our policies (e.g., pornography or copyrighted images).

    How do I block someone?

There are two ways to block someone: Go to their profile page and block them by navigating to the "Block Me" link on the left side of their profile page under their large picture.

Lastly, please note that you can block someone through the "Block Me" link located next to messages in your Inbox. People will not be notified when you block them.

If you cannot block someone and would like to prevent them from viewing your profile, you can adjust your Privacy Settings accordingly. Just go to your "Account Settings" and then click on the "Privacy Settings" link.

We hope this gives you some of the necessary tools and tips to stay safe, and have fun, while online.
